A Christmas Story

I have put off this blog entry for long enough. We did so much and so much happened I have been dreading the entry time for long enough. If I get long winded...sorry.If I don't provide enough detail....sorry. Now that I've covered my bases let's get on with it.

Saturday 12/22 we left for sunny California. It was a gathering of Taylors and relatives around Gramps and A this year and the weather couldn't have agreed with us any more. We missed all the rain and got all the sun. Liam adjusted so much better this time then Thanksgiving in Michigan, as did Sean and I. Thanksgiving was the maiden air voyage and we learned from our mistakes. This time we took sheets and blankets from home and I think it made all the difference in the world, not to mention staying in the same time zone.
We spent a lot of time with family.....

We hit the beach for Liam's first time to the ocean and sand....

Liam got to meet his cousins Cooper and Ian....

Liam got plenty of face time with Gramps J and Grams Taylor....

And he got to meet the man, the myth, the legend - William Faye Boileau - his namesake....

Needless to say we were beat when we set foot back on Oregon soil. Some more then others ...Liam gave us the treat of a FOUR - 4 - quatro hour nap on the day after our return. It goes with out saying, and I am going to say it, we all needed that!

PS - Liam's Christmas gift to us all, behold the boy wonder.

Countdown to California

We only have to work today and tomorrow and then we are off for a whole week! Sean will be off until Jan. 2nd. I am actually going to work on New Year's Eve since I used most of my vacation time, and actually went in the hole a couple days, for maternity leave earlier this year (but so worth it). Sean is back from a training he had down in California so the poor guy flew down, spent 3 days and flew back and then 3 days later will be back on a plane to California for a Taylor Family Christmas. We are hoping the rain holds off in San Diego since we are getting plenty up here in Portland.

Liam has new tricks I must update you on. First, the little man is crawling, but only backwards for now. This totally cracks me up! I mean it's progress from the getting up on all fours and rocking back and forth but the poor guy is frustrated. Sean pointed this out the other day and I finally witnessed it, Liam spots the toy or object of his affection and decides he is going to make his move. He does a super quick, ninja like flip and pushes himself up on his arms. We are locked into crawling position. All this he has mastered, it's the second half of the formula he is struggling on. Once he starts crawling he is moving backwards and the look on his face is shock. It hurts sometimes to watch because you can see from his facial expression that he is confused as to why he is getting further and further away from where he wants to be. Then the grunting, whining and the face plant in the carpet ends the cycle. Like I said, hard to watch but I know it's good because he is learning.

Next trick, the JumpaRoo. Liam has been rockin' the JumpaRoo for awhile now but you can see the switch has turned on for him, "If I move my legs like this, I bounce". He is about to bounce right out of the thing he gets going so fast and high! Once he is finished with the JumpaRoo the screaming starts because he can't figure out how to stop. So here I have this baby sling shotting himself up and down, up and down but the look is on his face again. That look.

Not sure we will be able to blog again before Christmas so.....

Just When You Thought You Have Given Your All

Preface to the story. I am at work, my brother Kevin sends me this in an email. I am in awe and amazed and emotional and some other things I can't quite put in words. Please, if you watch the video at the end have tissues handy.

Strongest Dad in the World
[From Rick Reilly, of Sports Illustrated]

I try to be a good father. Give my kids mulligans. Work nights to pay for their text messaging. Take them to swimsuit shoots.

But compared with Dick Hoyt, I suck.

Eighty-five times he’s pushed his disabled son, Rick, 26.2 miles in marathons. Eight times he’s not only pushed him 26.2 miles in a wheelchair but also towed him 2.4 miles in a dinghy while swimming and pedaled him 112 miles in a seat on the handlebars — all in the same day.

Dick’s also pulled him cross-country skiing, taken him on his back mountain climbing and once hauled him across the U.S. on a bike. Makes taking your son bowling look a little lame, right?

And what has Rick done for his father? Not much — except save his life.

This love story began in Winchester, Mass., 43 years ago, when Rick
was strangled by the umbilical cord during birth, leaving him
brain-damaged and unable to control his limbs.

“He’ll be a vegetable the rest of his life,” Dick says doctors told him and his wife, Judy, when Rick was nine months old. “Put him in an institution.”

But the Hoyts weren’t buying it. They noticed the way Rick’s eyes followed them around the room. When Rick was 11 they took him to the engineering department at Tufts University and asked if there was anything to help the boy communicate. “No way,” Dick says he was told. “There’s nothing going on in his brain.”

“Tell him a joke,” Dick countered. They did. Rick laughed. Turns out a lot was going on in his brain.

Rigged up with a computer that allowed him to control the cursor by touching a switch with the side of his head, Rick was finally able to communicate. First words? “Go Bruins!” And after a high school classmate was paralyzed in an accident and the school organized a charity run for him, Rick pecked out, “Dad, I want to do that.”

Yeah, right. How was Dick, a self-described “porker” who never ran more than a mile at a time, going to push his son five miles? Still, he tried. “Then it was me who was handicapped,” Dick says. “I was sore for two weeks.”

That day changed Rick’s life. “Dad,” he typed, “when we were running, it felt like I wasn’t disabled anymore!”

And that sentence changed Dick’s life. He became obsessed with giving Rick that feeling as often as he could. He got into such hard-belly shape that he and Rick were ready to try the 1979 Boston Marathon.

“No way,” Dick was told by a race official. The Hoyts weren’t quite a single runner, and they weren’t quite a wheelchair competitor. For a few years Dick and Rick just joined the massive field and ran anyway, then they found a way to get into the race officially: In 1983 they ran another marathon so fast they made the qualifying time for Boston the following year.

Then somebody said, “Hey, Dick, why not a triathlon?”

How’s a guy who never learned to swim and hadn’t ridden a bike since he was six going to haul his 110-pound kid through a triathlon? Still, Dick tried.

Now they’ve done 212 triathlons, including four grueling 15-hour Ironmans in Hawaii. It must be a buzzkill to be a 25-year-old stud getting passed by an old guy towing a grown man in a dinghy, don’t you think?

Hey, Dick, why not see how you’d do on your own? “No way,” he says. Dick does it purely for “the awesome feeling” he gets seeing Rick with a cantaloupe smile as they run, swim and ride together.

This year, at ages 65 and 43, Dick and Rick finished their 24th Boston Marathon, in 5,083rd place out of more than 20,000 starters. Their best time? Two hours, 40 minutes in 1992 — only 35 minutes off the world record, which, in case you don’t keep track of these things, happens to be held by a guy who was not pushing another man in a wheelchair at the time.

“No question about it,” Rick types. “My dad is the Father of the Century.”

And Dick got something else out of all this too. Two years ago he had a mild heart attack during a race. Doctors found that one of his arteries was 95% clogged. “If you hadn’t been in such great shape,” one doctor told him, “you probably would’ve died 15 years ago.”

So, in a way, Dick and Rick saved each other’s life.

Rick, who has his own apartment (he gets home care) and works in Boston, and Dick, retired from the military and living in Holland, Mass., always find ways to be together. They give speeches around the country and compete in some backbreaking race every weekend, including this Father’s Day.

That night, Rick will buy his dad dinner, but the thing he really wants to give him is a gift he can never buy.

“The thing I’d most like,” Rick types, “is that my dad sit in the chair and I push him once.”

Something Clever

My favorite little thing under the tree!

Getting Closer to Christmas

So my friend LeeAnn sent me a really nice email - 30 things that change when you have a baby. Don't worry, I am not going to include all 30 but I am going to make a note of the ones that really rang true for me and I added my own thoughts:

3. The sacrifices you thought you made to have a child no longer seem like sacrifices.
(we preferred a bottle of wine and a Netflix movie over a crowded bar anyways)
6. You find that your baby's pain feels much worse than your own.
(proven last night with a 5 min scream fest)
10. You think of someone else 234,836,178,976 times a day.
(about a million+ pictures on my work computer)
13. You look at your baby in the mirror instead of yourself.
(walking around with acorn squash in my hair)
16. You discover how much there is to say about one tooth.
(previous Tooth Watch 2007 blog entries)
19. You'd rather buy a plastic tricycle than that sweater that you've been dying to have.
(I am sure Ann Taylor Loft will have some cute sweaters next year)
26. You give parents with a screaming child an 'I-know-the-feeling' look instead of a 'Can't-they-shut-him-up?' one.
(and think to myself 'thank goodness that's not my baby!')
28. You take the time for one more hug and kiss even if it means you'll be late.
(so I show up at daycare 5 minutes sooner)
29. You learn that taking a shower is a luxury.
(no make-up and a ponytail are your first clues I haven't showered)

Christmas cards are done. Only 3 more gifts to purchase - which probably means 10 total and I am forgetting 7. The house is as decorated as it is going to get. Only 6 more work days until I am off for a whole glorious week. Life is Good!

Winter Weather in Portland

Neither wind, nor rain, nor sleet, nor snow, when the baby wants to go for a walk then a walking we must go.

The temperature was 34 degrees and there were light flurries gusting on the wind. Liam was in his new "Bob" walker, bundled up with blanket and wearing a strange hat. He was happy as a clam the entire time. I thought I was the only person who had ice in their veins. This kid may be the topper.

Van Halen 2007

Well, every now and then it is good to regress a bit into your childhood. Seeing Van Halen last Saturday was just that, a trip down memory lane. The last time I saw them live was in 1984 and I have to say they sounded just as good now as they did back then. I don't remember paying
$8 a beer either but I was only 13, so maybe the guys that bought them for us could comment on that - just kidding!

The Power of Cuteness

And the power of Liam's cuteness has saved him once again! What was up with him last night?
Went down at bedtime no problem, 11:30 rolls around, my turn, get him a bottle, he is Joe calm and quiet during the bottle, I'm thinking this is way too easy, obviously I did not know what he had in mind. Back to crib, me to bed and junior's talking and squawking comes through the monitor, that I can handle. It is the high pitched, one long breath, paint peeling, screech that gets me. Dolphins of the world take notice when this kid lets loose! Back downstairs. I try the pacifier, the rubbing his belly, the rubbing the head, I picked him up and rocked him, we bounced on the ball, NOTHING WORKED! Now to clarify, at this point he is not screaming anymore, actually he is quiet calm and low key, but wide awake, like it's 2:00 in the afternoon wide awake. He is playing with the collar of my robe and gently rubbing my face with his super soft little baby hands...AHHHH. Yeah AHHH if only I didn't have to work the next day, and the next day was not the end of the month, last day of the month, skip lunch at work so we can hit goal kind of day. If it was Friday night I would have absorbed every ounce of his calm, cuddling ways last night, but it was only Thursday night. I resorted to asking a 6 month old what I can do to get him to sleep, side note - this tactic did NOT work. Eventually he dozes off to LA LA Land and I slowly and oh so carefully creep out of the nursery. Not an easy task in a home built in 1932 with hardwood floors, it's like land mine central in his room. One and a half hours pass since this mother son dance started and I am finally climbing back into bed.

On the bright side, I have been making Liam's baby food and it is super easy and actually fun. And better yet, I started a new book that has nothing to do with birthing or child rearing!!! It is a total mindless chicklette book and I am loving every juicy word.

Turkey Day 2007

So the MI trip has come and is now gone. We actually flew on Thanksgiving in hopes of avoiding a lot of traffic and our plan worked! We got bumped to FIRST CLASS on the way there, yeah. So Sean and I are standing in our row, I am holding the bug, older couple (obviously without children) board and have the seats in front of us, she turns and says to me "oh a baby, he's going to be good during the flight right?" Seriously? Did she just say that to me. I smiled and nodded politely. "oh yes, he's a very good baby". What the?! Like I control him crying, geez people. But who cares about her, we are in first class! Liam proceeds to snuggle in and sleep 80% of the flight...thank you Jesus. Our bag is about the 10th bag off the belt and off to Hertz. Sean and I walk up to the Gold Member board and What the...why am I not seeing Taylor? Ugh, inside we go. They forgot to put us on the board so they upgrade our vehicle AT NO EXTRA CHARGE. Finally at Mom and Dad's house. Holy mackerel were the little ones wound up.

Liam had some serious trouble sleeping in the pack and play so he ends up sleeping in bed with Sean and I. OK, how do people do this every night?? We were both afraid of rolling over on him. He was glued to me half of the time so changing positions was not in the cards. After all was said and done I think we averaged about 4 hours of sleep a night.

Friday night Sean headed out to dinner with college buddies and I met 4 high school friends and headed to my 20 Year High School reunion. It was amazing how great our class looked! So many girls looked the same. I had so much fun, catching up with some girls I had not seen since graduation, hearing about jobs and kids and husbands. I am so happy I went. I think there was close to 70 women that showed up, some from CA, WA, FL, TX and a bunch of other states too. So admittedly there were clicks at school, it was an all girls school, but it was funny to see how everyone slipped back into 'their group'. They weren't bad clicks, everyone got along, they were just clicks. No big shockers at the reunion, besides the fact that 3 women have passed away since graduation.

On Saturday we had a chance to head out to my brother Kevin's house. His wife Jenny and the kids were there and so excited to have company. Madeline was too funny, she wanted to keep Liam as her brother. She loves her brothers and she doesn't want just another one, she wanted Liam. We got a chance to meet our newest nephew Ryan, the Chunky Monkey. Such a happy guy, hanging out and smiling on cue. Ryan is 10 months so the boys are close in age, I can't wait to watch them play as they get older.

Sunday saw us back at the airport and nervous as all get out flying with Liam. I think we thought he used up all his good flying on the flight to MI. We were wrong. Don't get me wrong, he was not a angel, he fussed and screamed a couple of times, but we got him all settled in and he ended up sleeping for 3 hours...again Thank you Jesus.

Sean and I are back to work, Liam has a horrible cold....so it's life as usual in the Taylor house hold.

Stressed for the Holidays

The day before Thanksgiving and I am freakin' out. Freakin' out thinking about flying tomorrow. All the things to pack and not forget and will Liam be OK on the plane and then we have to install a car seat in the rental car and now Liam has a cold so he is snotty and coughy. At least we got a parking spot reserved. That was going to be a huge issue for us if all the lots filled up because cabs don't have infant seats. We don't have any family or friends that live close so we can't call in any favors (count yourselves lucky). We were going to have to take the MAX (train) to the airport, interpret as leaving the house an extra hour early with bags and babe in tow. If this reserved parking works out we will be doing it for our San Diego Christmas flight too. But now that that is NOT a worry I can focus my worry on the kid with the cold.

So the laundry list of things to do runs through my head while I sit at work trying to call people who have already started their holidays. Funny but the list does include laundry, Sean dropped sweet boy Emmett at the kennel this morning, packing for baby, what to bring, what not to bring, pack for me, what to bring, what not to bring, can't forget the camera....you know stuff like that. In the back of my mind I try to hear the voice reminding me "no biggie if you forget something because you can always buy it there, holidays are about family". Sometimes the voice gets drowned out by my control freak personality but it never fully goes away.

I am very much looking forward to the Thanksgiving dinner, meeting my nephew Ryan, seeing everyone and my 20 year HS Reunion. It is just the getting there and getting back part that sucks.

Carr calls it a career at Michigan

Ann Arbor, MI - University of Michigan football coach Lloyd Carr announced his retirement Monday.

Ever Grab the Wrong Bottle at 3am?

Saturday Nov 24, Noon EST

The Land of Nod by Robert Louis Stevenson

From breakfast on through all the day
At home among my friends I stay,
But every night I go abroad
Afar into the land of Nod.

All by myself I have to go,
With none to tell me what to do -
All along besides the streams
And up the mountain-sides of dreams.

The strangest things are there for me,
Both things to eat and things to see,
And many frightening sights abroad
Till morning in the land of Nod.

Try as I like to find the way,
I never can get back by day,
Nor can remember plain and clear
The curious music that I hear.

6 Month Check Up

The bug had his 6 month check up on Monday and it went great (minus the huge needle they plunged into my baby's thighs 4 times!). He is 26 inches long - 90th percentile and weighed in at 15 lbs 12 oz - 20th percentile. I like to think of him as a lean, mean pooping machine.

While waiting for our Pediatrician (who is the GREATEST - thank you Alicia for the referral) Sean got Liam laughing, I mean really laughing, this was a first for us. Thankfully my phone takes video so we caught it on tape. Now bear with us people, remember that was taken on a phone so the quality is not the greatest.

So I just published this and then watched it and the video quality is HORRIBLE but still watch it for the sound. I double dog dare you NOT to smile when you hear him laugh.

Tub Buddies

Sean is out of town right now, not sure if he will be able to check the blog today so I cannot guarantee how long this picture will be posted but how could I resist????????After posting our happy, little, naked man, Sean's Dad was kind enough (he-he) to share their happy, little, naked man. I absolutely LOVE this photo! I can't believe how much our Liam looks like Sean! Should I spare the identity of Sean's tub buddy? AHH heck, we're all family, it's his cousin Faye. Don't be mad Faye, you guys are too cute not to share.

We had our bug at his 6 month check up yesterday, details...and video...to follow later today so stay tuned.

Merritts Merritts Everywhere

Look what happens when you email me pictures....you make the blog! Has anyone seen kids cuter then these?? I think NOT!

This would be every body's favorite party guy Ryan, Miss Maddy, and Nicholas Pickelas. They belong to my younger (had to bite my tongue and not say little) brother Kevin and his beautiful wife Jenny.

Thanksgiving (back in MI this year) will be the first time the whole lot of Merritt offspring will be together so get your camera ready. I can't wait to take video, it should be a hoot watching all the kiddos interact. I am told that Maddy and Nick are busting at the seams to meet their newest cousin Liam. Not to mention my oldest niece, Caitlin (18 years old...what! holy crap that makes me feel old) is asking for pictures. I think it is awesome that there are 7 nieces/nephews total. Caitlin and John belong to Mary Beth, Kevin has the three, Steve has one monkey named Ian and now we have our one. When you list them out it appears we are a little boy heavy in the offspring department. Maybe someone will add some more girl power to the bunch. NO NO NO -- I am not implying anything there, I am just saying.

Sean only has 2 more Saturday classes!!!!

Tooth Watch 2007!

Tooth #2 is in!

Introducing Ana Grace McGinnis

Amy and Shane have welcomed another girl into the family. Poor Shane, poor, poor Shane, even the cat is a female! They are going to call her Annie!! Annie was born on October 5th at 9:25am. She was 7lb. 3oz., and 21 inches long. She has blonde hair, and blue eyes, and looks like she could be a twin to big sister Megan.

I have gotten to see her a couple times so far and she is the sweetest little monkey, cute as a bug. Amy says that Megan has been a wonderful big sister that loves to help out taking care of her new little sister.

Congratulations McGinnis Clan!
